5 TIPS FOR THE TONAL DRESSING TREND

5 TIPS FOR THE TONAL DRESSING TREND

Tonal dressing is one of the hottest trends this year and is perfect for winter fashion! Winter layers are the perfect excuse to get creative with your colour palette and play with tones. When we talk about tonal dressing we are referring to either tones within the same colour or different shades of the same colour. Technically tone refers to the relative lightness or darkness of a colour like Navy blue and Baby blue, but there is also room to play within the colour spectrum for example Bright red and Maroon.

The great thing about this trend is that there really are no rules. The problem with no rules is that there is so much choice it can actually make things harder! So here are 5 tips that will help you feel confident when putting together your tonal looks!

USE THE BASICS

Unless you are particularly fond of wearing one particular colour, you may not have a full outfit in one colour to start with, so don’t be afraid to incorporate a basic in a those classic tones of white and cream or black and grey. Choose the one that fits best with the tone closest to it. For example if you have a light or pastel coloured jacket then opt for white or cream top. If you are using darker tones like navy, charcoal grey or maroons opt for black.

PATTERNS

If you’ve always been curious about trying pattern play, this is a safe space to experiment. Try patterns in various tones of your chosen colour. It’s a really great chance to pattern clash too as it works amazingly well when the colour is consistent throughout. Basically if your colour is consistent you can do no wrong.

TEXTURE

Texture its a wonderful way to make sure pieces still stand out individually so you don’t blur into a blob of one colour. White can actually be a challenging colour for a full layered tonal look, so play with volume and shine. Incorporate satin, silks, metallics, shimmer and sequins for your pop and Faux furs, wools, weaves & knits for depth and body in the look. You can also use leather or vegan leather for a muted or more understated pop if shimmer isn’t your thing.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

If its starting to feel a little overwhelming, lets go back to basics. Pick one tone and stick within the colour pallet. You can go all darks or all lights, think those super on trend head to toe pastel looks. For some of us, all pastel feels a little risky. Whether it makes you feel too visible or you just can’t be trusted with a red wine or tomato based sauce, I hear you. All darker shares still looks elegant and stunning as seen here in red. Plain and pattern free is totally fine. I’d still advise a mix of texture, but this will probably happen naturally when pulling various pieces.

CONTRASTING SPLASH

Last but not least, don’t be afraid to put one foot outside the zone and include a splash of a contrasting colour. Use accessories to do this most effectively. A belt, shoe or bag in a stand out colour can really elevate your fashion game. When selecting the pop colour find the complimentary colour for your base colour. Have a look at a colour wheel and see what colour is directly across from yours. Orange pops with Blue outfits, Purple and Yellow are great together too. While it doesn’t fit the rule I’m a huge fan of Red & Pink used as contrasting colours too. Again this is a guide of guaranteed success rather than a rule.
