How To Wear Denim in 2021
There would be very few people who don’t have at least one denim item in their wardrobe today. While the fabric and the original blue jean have been around since the late 1800s thanks to Levi Strauss, it reached fashion status almost 100 years later in the 1970s. Since then denim has gone beyond the blue jean to create just about any fashion item you can think of, including accessories like shoes, bags and hats.
With so many options and decades of looks, how can you to make sure your denim choice doesn't make you look dated or even reveal your age? Here are the on trend ways to wear denim in 2021. See that latest Jeans, Jackets and Dresses below.
Blue Jeans
Blue Jeans are always in fashion but it’s important to pay attention to trend changes in cut and fit. The popularity of different shades of blue also change over time. Your choice of jeans can have you looking flawless or just as easily reveal your fashion fail. So what styles should you be going for in 2021?
Even if you refuse to be told or don’t want to admit it, skinny blue jeans are out. We’ve moved beyond the “mom jean” but high waisted or regular waisted jeans are the go over low rise. You can still go for fitted but make sure it’s a straight cut leg and that the ankle fit is loose. If you’re ready to embrace looser fits, start thinking 90s wide leg denim and get ready for cuts inspired by the 70s with flared out and and extra long legs. You’ll also notice that dark indigo is harder to find as designers lean towards much lighter washes, bordering on pale grey or almost white. Rips and distressed options are still very acceptable and make a great contrast when dressing them up.
Denim Jackets
The ideal denim jacket cut is a little bit more down to personal preference and how you style it. If you’re one of those people who is finally getting on board this trend and aren’t sure where to start, here are some hot tips for your 2021 purchases. Mid wash is still popular for jackets and while you can go light wash too, if you’re styling double denim the mid wash can give you a nice contrast for lighter pieces. Cut wise, oversized boyfriend style jackets are very popular and a great throw-on all year round. Alternatively a cropped cut that highlights the waist can be very flattering. One of my favourite options this year is the sherpa or fleece lined jackets! They are super cosy and still very chic.
Dresses
Denim dresses are back this year in a big way. You don’t have to keep them for casual occasions either. Im loving finding more elegant or classic dress styles done in denim. It feels very fashion forward and a new way to push the boundaries on where denim is appropriate. That said its still a great option for cute casual or summer dresses. There’s really no style of denim dress that is off limits, so have fun.
And what about demin accessories you may ask? Pop them away for now. They had a resurgence circa 2015 and will have you looking dated, but definitely do not throw them out. They will be back on trend soon enough!
Remember whatever you wear, be you and own it and you’ll always have style.
