How To Style Your Winter Staple | Long Coats
Talking about a staple winter clothing piece, long coat would definitely be a no-brainer. Unlike spring and summer, winter looks could easily get a bit dull and boring. Especially when the weather is freezing cold, you just don't feel like putting much effort and thoughts into styles other than keeping warm. Here I share with you some style ideas hoping to bring you some passion and inspiration to dress your long coat into a practical outfit while looking very well put together.
The Classic Corporate Look
I believe a well-tailored black long coat is a wardrobe essential for most corporate workers like myself. I am a total lover for all black outfits as you know from my previous style posts. However, I would highly suggest using contrast colours when wearing a black long coat since the heavy material used in most winter pieces would easily weigh down the whole look.
A pop of white and the metal accessories in the above look immediately brings life to the style.
If your corporate dress code is not very strict, then try a total white look inside. It is a look that requires the most minimal effort but appears to be a well-thought-out look. The thin belt that cinches the waist, the slightly flared pants that elongates the proportion as well as the long sweater sleeves are all the little details that perfectly complete the look.
Girls on the go
As most of the long coats are with quite a strong constructive finish, you can always wear more casual styles inside to balance out the formal feel. With the pandemic going on currently, who doesn’t own a set of comfortable loungewear to lounge around home? Why not wearing them out with a long coat?
For style like this, I would definitely go for a monochromatic look just to elevate a bit since there are a lot casual pieces involved, like chunky Dad sneakers and hoodie.
You can always replace the sweatshirt to an oversized chunky sweater and add a statement belt to make the look less casual as wearing a set of sweats.
Roll up the coat sleeves a bit, tuck your hair into the sweater, y’all know, the devil is in the details. Small details like this can completely change the vibe.
If you are not a fan of oversized and slouchy look, wear a perfectly tailored look inside still can create a casual chic vibe.
By comparing these looks, the formula here is to wear casual inside with a masculine designed coat and wear fitted inside with a relaxed designed coat, and of course don’t forget about the sneakers. :p
The perfect "in between"
Speaking of the most worn styles with coat, how can we forget denim? Being the year-rounder, denim is literally the wardrobe basic that pairs with everything including your winter long coat.
A pair of straight leg jeans would be an easy decision as it is the most versatile style in the denim category. It can be dressed up or down depending on what tops you fancy.
Changing your denim into something ribbed or something boyfriend fitted and replace your boots with a pair of sneakers, your throw-on casual look is achieved.
Play with the statement over-the-knee boots
Boots are for sure the most frequently worn shoes during those colder months, the over-the-knee boots are no doubt the most bold among them all yet the hardest to look modern and styled.
Continuing with the denim styles, wear the OTK boots over a pari of skinny jeans to make it a wearable everyday look. The trick here is to minimise the colours on you in order not to look too busy since the boots already takes up such a big portion of the body. Outfit combo as below definitely draws attention to the coat instead of the OTK boots.
Putting two statement pieces together can be tricky, the point here is to be coordinated and balanced. As the look below, keeping everything else simple, you won’t feel overwhelmed even tho both coat and OTK boots are quite bold.
Added to that, not sure if you have noticed, both looks use either hat or high bun to elongate the proportion of the body. That’s another great tip when wearing OTK boots with long coat.
There you go, hope i bring enough inspirations and tips on how to wear your long coat and create a well-put-together and contemporary style. xx
