Style Guide: Plus Size Dresses

Style Guide: Plus Size Dresses

One of my biggest frustrations regarding plus size fashion is that it seems to come from a completely different planet. Where are the clothes that look like they’re inspired by current fashion trends or this season's designer looks? It’s like they have created things to cover us up, out of the fabric that no one else wants to wear and figured we will just be grateful something fits. I really wanted to create a style guide that lets you know that as a plus size women you can demand more and you can find more. Here are some examples of styles and trends to look out for to elevate your plus sizestyle

Fitted Dresses

Do not be afraid of the fitted dress. It’s actually far more flattering than the sack like dresses that hide your body completely or hang like a tent from your chest. You can find loose knits or thicker fabrics that skim and smooth while highlighting your waist, legs and shape. Yes you’ll probably show off a few lumps and bumps but so what. Embrace who you are because there is nothing wrong with it and wear a fitted dress with confidence.

Bright colours like Illuminating yellow

Plus size dresses often avoid bright and bold colours because brands assume the people wearing them must want to hide. Ignore that completely. Illuminating Yellow is the colour of 2021 and you’ve just as much right to rock it as anyone else. Ok I know all skin tones can't pull off yellow, but that doesn't mean you can't go for a gorgeous rich orange or hot pink which are also hot for 2021.

Belted looks

Show off that waist! Whether it’s a statement belt or one that’s perfectly matched to your outfit, belting that waist makes such a difference to the overall style. It helps your looks appear put together, consciously chosen and finished. It also highlights those curves and you can play with darker tones to visually cinch the waist.

Off the shoulder

Showing a bit of skin can be very flattering and the off the shoulder highlights the neck and shoulders and elongates the upper body. You might want to invest in a good strapless bra to make the most of this look but it’s flattering on all body types. Whether you go for a straight cut or one with a ruffle it's a flattering and classic neckline that always looks elegant.

Short dresses

Being plus size doesnt mean you have to live in maxi dresses. Opting for shorter styles can really show off and elongate the leg and balance the body. It also helps define your body and break it into sections instead of one block of fabric. White sneakers or heels that match your skin tone also help to balance and elongate the look.

Statement sleeves

I completely understand that some people prefer to cover their arms and feel more confident with a sleeve. There is a difference between a nice stylish sleeve and one that's been thrown on as an afterthought. Pay attention to the cut! Make sure the arm hole is cut close to the under arm so it’s true to your shape and looks more tailored. Keep on eye on sleeve trends and go for those where possible. Cuffed bell sleeves and puff sleeves have been popular and also shows off the wrist and forearm. Statement sleeves are also a great option, with details and patterns. Get playful. Just remember it needs to look deliberate rather than something there to hide your arms.

Evening Gowns

Embrace on trend colours and textures. Black is always elegant and classic but try metallics, sequins or texture to make it pop. With gowns you can go more fitted. If you want sleeves a long or ¾ fitted sleeve is a great option and don’t be afraid to show off shoulders and decolletage. If you’re going floor length, something long and flowy that has a bit of a train will be very flattering. You can even include a long split which will help break up a full skirt and balance the look by defining the leg.

Happy dress shopping, because it should be a happy experience. Hopefully these will give you some ideas on what to look out for and feel good in. For more Inspo follow the influencers tagged under the images.
