Style Guide: The Trench Coat Edit
While Trench Coats never really retired as a wardrobe staple, they are back with vengeance this season. Revamped and reimagined for a new decade to remind us they are just as fashion forward as they are classic. If you’re looking to invest in a trench, and lets be honest some do cost a small fortune, or you’re looking to update your collection with a few on trend options that will still last you for seasons to come, then this is the blog to read. Bringing you updates on the classics and the new variations.
Style Tips for wearing Trench Coats. These are usually in a lighter fabric than thick wool coats and so are the perfect transitional piece between seasons. They are also brilliant layering pieces and can make a statement on their own or add complexity to a statement outfit. Often worn undone, some trenches are know for their iconic or bright linings. If you are tying up your trench the traditional approach is to forget the buckle and just tie it, but this season is seeing more people cinching in the waist with a belted look.
The Burberry Trench. No discussion of trench coats can be complete with out mentioning the classic and copied Burberry Trench. I’ll spare you a fashion history lesson but basically its the original trend setting trench. Not resting on their win, Burberry releases innovative new versions every season as well as a classic option. If you invest in one of these it will last you a lifetime. I still regret not picking up a thrifted one at Camden Market in London where a stall had the largest collection of the real thing I’d seen outside Burberry! If you’re budget doesn’t stretch that far, you’re looking for the classic tan/beige outer, with a tortoiseshell or black buckle and buttons to get the look. If you are interested, google the history of the Burberry Trench or Thomas Burberry.
70s vibes are so on trend in 2021, as is yellow! Why not opt for a gorgeous leather or Vegan leather trench in a cool 70s shade. If you enjoy browns and mustards in your wardrobe this will be a great option for a long time to come! You could even opt for a dark tan or chocolate brown. Super chic.
The two tone trench is emerging as a popular variation this season. Whether you opt for the leather look or another fabric, two or more tone panels are a great way to elevate this popular look for 2021. Two tone can also involve a mix of fabrics to create some of the stand out looks seen this season.
The oversized trend continues and the trench is easily adapted to this. We are seeing extra long sleeves exaggerated shoulders and warped or super long hemlines to create the oversized trench vibes which are becoming more and more popular.
Get colourful! Love a colourful trench. Perhaps a classic pastel or opt for one in the seasons on trend colours like this Neon Blue or Illuminating Yellow.
Trench coats started as light weight rain coats so I love the elevated raincoat vibes of a Patent leather trench. This glossy shinny red is such a statement on its own but even in black, that beautiful glossy finish is a great way to take a basic and make it a statement piece.
The classic Leather Trench was a huge hit in the 90s and is back again with the 90s is another big influence over the past few seasons. As seen on Hayley Bieber here, the leather trench is versatile, polished and relaxed all at the same time.
