Trendii Report: How TV Inspired an 80s Revival
With recent 80s inspired shows like Season 4 of the Crown, Stranger Things, It’s A Sin, Glow and many more, there has been a sudden resurgence of 80s fashion. We’ve seen a dramatic spike in people searching real life 80’s icons like Princess Diana, the sales of roller skates are up and downloads of artists like Stevie Nicks and Duran Duran have seen a sudden spike. The most searched items though are 80’s inspired fashion!
Whether it’s nostalgia for all the clothes you wanted as a kid in the 80’s that you can finally buy for yourself, or a new generation discovering just how much of a style icon Diana was, the desire to bring some of that 80’s glam to the wardrobe is seeing designers getting on board and giving us looks inspired by this iconic decade. Here are some of the style trends making a come back.
ONE SHOULDER
We can’t discuss 80’s fashion without featuring Princess Diana. Even 20+ years after her tragic death, she is still driving fashion trends. Much of this 80s resurgence has been attributed to Season 4 of the Crown and the Diana story line as portrayed by Emma Corrin. Clothing inspired by looks featured in the show has since appeared on both runways, magazines and vintage items on eBay are suddenly worth much more.
The ruching may be a tad much for a modern day princess, but the one shoulder cut with dramatic sleve is here to stay. A very 80s look that is still loved now by designers as seen in this Saks Fifth Avenue One shoulder mini dress.
BOLD JUMPERS
Cute, bold, patterned jumpers were a huge look in the 80s. Google iconic 80s jumpers and this black sheep Jumper Diana wore appears. It was also featured in the Crown which saw vintage versions up on eBay and modern versions appearing everywhere. If it doesn’t have to be sheep or alpacas bold knits are still on trend! Go for colourful cookie cutter shapes like hearts and polka dots. You can even opt for little pom poms!
GIRLS ON FILM
I had cover one more memorable scene from The Crown of 19 year old Diana, because these super girly trends of Pink and Roller skates are two 80s vibes that could not be bigger right now unless it was the 80s. We know bold colours were a big part of fashion in this decade but we sometimes forget the sweet, pastle, girly looks that were also popular, like these pink gingham pants similar to ones actually worn by the Princess. Roller skates are also back in a big way and can be found in very traditional 80s styles and even bought from retailers such as the Iconic.
COLOUR & DENIM
Another popular show driving this 80s revival is Stranger Things. While some of the main cast are children, the 80s style backdrop is reminding people of the things they loved best about the decades style. Replica dresses to this one worn by Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven can be found online and it’s even easier to recreate this look on Sadie Sink as Max because high waisted acid wash denim is back! As are these cute and colourful stripe tees and all in adult sizes!
THE LEATHER JACKET
A statement jacket, especially in leather, was a must have in any 80s wardrobe and they’re back. While many people are opting for classic black and giving a nod to the 80s through the cut and details, you can truly embrace bold colours. A decade known for its neon fashion, the 80s was loud and proud. GLOW celebrates all the gorgeous neon in the girls performing costumes but even their day to day looks show us how colourful the era was. This Philipp Plein embellished lambskin jacket gives you all of those 80s & GLOW feels and will leave you ready to take on anyone.
THE DENIM JACKET
We can’t talk 80s fashion without looking at Denim and in particular Denim jackets. If you want a great depiction of 80s day to day fashion in London, check out the Stan series “It’s A Sin”. While it deals with some heartbreaking subjects, it also celebrates what it was to be young and bold in the 80s and it’s reflected in the fashion. This cute Denim Jacket worn by Jill in Episode 1 with its scrunch sleeves, puffed shoulders and pleated front is such a great example of the era. If you’re looking to give a nod to the era with a denim jacket, you can’t go past a slightly oversized Levis denim jacket like this.
With more from these shows to come and plenty more to work through when you’ve seen these, I think 80s style will be a hot trend for a while longer. I hope you’ve enjoyed a little time travel with me, now I’m off to shop for some great 80s staples while I’m feeling inspired. Maybe even some roller skates…..
