RUNWAY EDIT - 5 Must Haves from Melbourne Fashion Week
After earning the title of the most locked down city in the world, Melbourne has burst back into action with a vengeance! What better way to enter post lockdown life than with Melbourne Fashion Week. It was wonderful to see the city and so many venues that have stood dark for so long, buzzing with people and excitement. When you’ve been living in and looking at activewear for so long, fashion is even more exciting.
After taking in almost every show across the festival, I’ve pulled together a runway edit featuring my top 5 must haves according to Melbourne Fashion Week. Each show featured a variety of Australian designers specialising in very different styles, but there were some common threads through all the shows that have inspired this edit.
The top 5 must haves, featuring looks direct from the Melbourne runways. Plus one bonus must have for the more adventurous.
SOMETHING BLUE
A very specific powder blue actually! Royal blue also featured heavily, but this powder blue was seen on almost every single runway and in the collections of a variety of designers. My personal favorites would be the wrap coat from Asiyam, a Melbourne based designer that creates minimalist modern takes on the arabic aesthetic, and the blue linen suit from Maara Collective, an Australian Resort brand that won the National Indigenous fashion award in 2020.
SUITING
You simply must have a coloured suit. Find a good one and it will be your event “go to” look for the next 12 months. You can even choose between wide leg or straight leg pants or shorts for the bottom half! Linen is a popular fabric choice for this style but if you’re anything like me you’ll find the creases frustrating, so opt for a linen mix or a more traditional suiting fabric. The amazing cream and rust suit by label Leo Lin, with a colourful ruffled blouse, was my pic of the week.
70s VIBES
70s inspired looks stood out across all the runways. Whether it was simple nods to the era with the cut of a collar or pant or patters that looked like they were exact revivals, there is no denying this era is a strong influence in current fashion trends. The beautiful Crochet looks by Nevenka Melbourne were a stand out.
WHITE
I know, white for summer, how groundbreaking, but it’s back because it's a classic fail safe that is instant elegance. White looks featured included beautiful sheer and floating fabrics as well as chunky lace and the popular cut out features.
TIERED LAYERS
Midi and maxi length dresses, particularly those with tiered layers are definitely on trend and you will need one or more options in your wardrobe. They pick up on that floaty and ethereal look that was trending across the runways and play with volume and extra fabric.
BONUS : BOWS!
Bow trains were super popular and were featured in the collections of a number of designers. Bow hair pieces also made appearances and variations on the theme were seen on most of the runways. If that's your vibe, embrace it and have fun. Tie longer straps with bows and include hair ribbons.
