Mom Jeans vs Skinny Jeans
Denim is an absolute staple year-round, and there are so many different styles to choose from.
Nowadays jeans come in such a large variety of colours, lengths and styles that there is almost too many to choose from.
But never has there been such a tumultuous divide such as the one between mom and skinny jeans. Most people feel very strongly one way or the other, a lot having converted to mom jeans after they came back into fashion, swearing to never squeeze themselves into skinny jeans again.
Others never made the switch to mom jeans in the first place. Don’t even get me started on high waisted vs mid-rise (low rise is never coming back).
Now I’m not here to make you switch sides, or hate on any pair more than another. I just want you to have all of the facts when you’re getting dressed in the morning.
What’s the Difference?
What makes a good pair of mom jeans, mom jeans? My ideal pair has gotta be high waisted, form-fitting around the waist. Baggier around the butt, the “saggy butt” is the main giveaway that it’s a pair of mom jeans in my opinion. Then the jeans should start to taper back in again to give a bit more of a slimmer fit towards your calves and ankles. Not skinny, but structured.
I’m sure we all know what defines a pair of skinny jeans. Honestly, I don’t think you can classify any pair as “skinny jeans” unless you’ve gotta jump up and down, maybe even roll around a bit to get your pair on your body and over that booty. No matter what size you are, if you’re not doing a little shimmy to get into them, then they’re not tight enough to be called skinny jeans. They should be fitted, but not tight, I mean it’s 2020 I’m not here for being uncomfortable in my clothes anymore. I want my skinny jeans to be like a warm hug enclosed around my legs.
Comfort Factor?
Not that I’m trying to give away any bias here, but I have maybe 7 pairs of mom jeans and maybe 2 pairs of skinny jeans. If you wanted to go true definition, maybe one pair that I really have to jump to get into.
Mom jeans are meant to be that practical everyday wear kind of jean. They’re basically built for comfort. Ideally, they should be loose enough around the stomach area that you can ingest an entire pizza and not have to undo the top button. Wearing them all day shouldn’t feel like a chore. They’re like a dressier pair of tracksuit pants.
Skinny Jeans, look I’ve definitely gone home on my lunch break and changed into different pants. Maybe not everyone is wearing them as tight as I was trying to? I tend to pick skinny jeans out if I’m thinking “No I won’t be sitting down or eating a meal in these pants”. I think that gives you some general idea to the comfort levels of skinny jeans.
Style Factor?
One of my favourite things is how differently I would style skinny jeans compared to mom jeans. Of course, this is just a guide, and true fashion is wearing pieces however the heck you want.
I’m all about mom jeans and vintage tees, maybe a fitted crop top. Do a whole 70s vibe to go along with your baggy butt pants. But like any good pair of jeans, you should be able to easily style them up dressier without much effort either. Mom jeans will give your “going out” outfit a whole different edge.
I love wearing my skinny jeans with a more sleek style outfit. Black skinny jeans to me say, I’m getting dressed up and I’m going out. No matter how you’ve styled them, you can automatically look put together and like you know what you’re doing.
Which pair make my butt look amazing?
Don’t dismiss the baggy butt of mom jeans! They too can really do wonders.
But (lol) I’ll let these examples do the talking for me.
At the end of the day, fashion is meant to be fun! Try all different styles and if you love wearing mom jeans, it doesn’t mean you can’t wear skinny jeans sometimes too.
