Monochrome Style
There’s an art to dressing head to toe in one colour. Ways to get each piece to stand out individually and have a moment rather than blending together into one big blob of fabric. I’m currently living in Melbourne and it’s the capital of dressing head to toe in black. Black can take you from winter to summer, from day to night and have you looking elegant and chic the whole time, so no wonder its a popular choice in a city of four seasons in one day and the after work cocktail. Having lived here a few years now I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learnt about this monochromatic style.
Before we move on I should point out that Monochrome actually means one colour. Mono = one and Chrome = colour, but over the years it’s a word that's become synonymous with all black or black and white outfits. Black and white are actually shades so can’t technically be defined as monochrome, but for the purposes of this blog I’m rolling with the popular vote. I just felt I should include this little bit of style education and acknowledge the truth, or my fashion school teacher would be very disappointed in me.
MIX UP YOUR FABRICS
Playing with a range of fabrics with allow each item to be seen. Try sheer pieces like these cute polka dot tights. Teamed up with shinny boots, a knit dress and a suit blazer, it makes for a subtle all black outfit that was styled to stand out.
MINIMALIST CHIC
You really don’t have to wear much black to create a chic and easy outfit. Keeping it as simple as a T shirt and pants with a few minimalist accessories is enough to look professional and put together. Mixing in a leather piece is always a great choice because it plays with fabric textures and elevates the look.
ACCESSORISE
When it comes to a monochrome look in black you can afford to ignore Coco Channel’s rule of keeping it simple. Add as many accessories as you like as long as they’re black and you’ll find it just adds more texture and personality to what might otherwise be a simple outfit. Don’t forget black nail polish too.
TEXTURE
Playing with bold texture in black can look really effective! Add faux fur, leather and layers. Don’t be afraid to go big and bulky too. You can always define your waist and shape with things like the belt pictured here and the tights to show off your legs.
SHINNY
Mix in some shimmer and shine for a statement monochrome outfit. This sequin blazer is a perfect way to set off a simple look and take it to glamorous heights. Throw it on at the end of the day to take your office look to the theatre or the rooftop bar! Or regular bar if your city isn’t into cocktails with a view.
LBD
An LBD (Little Black Dress) is a staple in every wardrobe but you need more than one! Aim for something summery in a light fabric, a good long sleeve knit dress for winter and finally a fancy option for evenings out. All 3 dresses will make a great base for styling looks summer through winter, day to night.
ELEGANZA
For the ultimate in sophisticated glamour, an all black gown can really pack a punch. Good designers will play with texture, shape, shine and fabrics in their designs so you don’t have to worry about blending into the background.
